When you have grown up hearing that the purpose of getting education is to get employment, it becomes a standard to which we hold ourselves. Our expectation is that upon completion of our studies we will apply for and successfully embark on our dream career.
Year upon year, we hear countless stories of graduate and post-graduate students who are experiencing depression because they can not find work. Others have stagnated economically to where they are still dependent on their parents. While very few venture into the world of entrepreneurship by way of looking at what others are doing and following suit and hoping for success. I often tell this story of someone I knew, who went into quail farming because it was touted as a money maker, at the end of the short-lived business, they took the quails to a field and threw them into the sky as a last effort to get rid of them, and even then, they did not fly away! We have many stories of businesses that are promoted as money-makers but lead to great loss of resources, as well as morale.
When we begin to understand the essence of building a business and the principles required to be successful as entrepreneurs, we will experience socio-economic impact that will provide an environment of hope and the building blocks for a wealth ecosystem. Changing the landscape of business in our communities will help shift the narrative that we go to school so we can get a job! Hopefully, the narrative can become that we get educated to build thriving businesses that serve generations.
